Sri Lanka walk with Ranatunga into semi-finals
When the Sri Lanka skipper decided to chase rather than let his strokeplayers have the first go after winning the toss, he was paying a compliment to New Zealand's fairytale win over Zimbabwe the other night. The five-wicket Lankan win did not come without the usual dose of drama. Jayasuriya lasted one ball, Atapattu made three while Aravinda de Silva had a duck and barely 20 balls into the Lankan reply, the world champions were facing disaster.

Ijaz saves Test but Australia clinch series
Ijaz Ahmed's hard fought century and a gritty 75 from Moin Khan enabled Pakistan draw the third and decisive cricket Test against Australia, but the tourists won the first series on Pakistan soil after 39 years on Monday. Richie Benaud had succeeded in beating Pakistan in Pakistan in the 1959-60 season when Australia recorded a 2-0 win in a three-match series.

Anand held by Piket
India's Vishwanathan Anand was held to a quick 21-move draw by Jeron Piket of The Netherlands in the third round of the Tilburg International Grandmasters Chess tournament. Anand still leads the 12-man field with 2.5 points after wins over Joel Lautier of France and Russian world number three Vladimir Kramnik in the first and second rounds.
