Civic works to be completed by March 31

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Oct 27: In just 24 hours after the BJP councillors lambasted their office-bearers for their alleged failure to control the administration, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has claimed that civic works to the tune of Rs 7 crore would be completed by March 31, 1999.

Plans have been chalked out to complete the civic works which include suggestions by councillors and works to be carried out under the budget for administrative wards for 1998-99, according to VMC sources.

Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria reviewed progress of civic works carried out under various budgetary heads on Tuesday in a five-hour meeting. Among the works reviewed included councillors quota and budget for the administrative wards for 1997-98, 1998-99, works from the entertainment tax grant and also works worth Rs 1.44 crore under the National Slum Development.

Aloria has assured that works relating to laying water pipelines and streetlights from the councillors' quota of 1998-99 and budget for the administrative wards for 1997-98 would be completed by the year end. He claimed that rate contracts were awarded and in the first phase various companies have been directed to despatch 5,000 meters cast iron pipes and other 5,000 meter pipes.

The executive engineers have been instructed to complete works from the MLA's grants and initiate work on the five remaining model roads. officers concerned have been ordered to invite new suggestions from the councillors in place of the rejected ones as the works were suggested in private areas.

A need was felt to upgrade the quality of work in laying the roads. An official spokesman said a revised proposal in tune with the norms of the public works department would soon be forwarded to the Standing Committee for approval.

The officers, however, have been cautioned not to compromise on the quality of work.

Among those who attended the meeting included City Engineer B K Desai, Additional City Engineer B S Trapasia, executive engineers and ward officers.
