25% Indians suffer from allergy, says expert

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Mumbai, Oct 28: As many as 25 per cent of Indians suffer from different types of allergies including asthma, skin irritations and respiratory disorders, said Dr Wiqar Shaikh, allergist and immunologist.

Modern housing, changed food habits, increasing consumption of junk foods, pets, certain plants, carpets, lack of ventilation and use of air-conditioners are aggravating the problem, and it could soon reach epidemic levels, he claimed.

Dr Shaikh, who is attached to Bombay Hospital, will attend the international Asia-Pacific conference on allergy and immunology to be held in Phillipines in December. He will make a detailed presentation on allergies in India.
