Vaibhav shocks Omkar

MUMBAI, October 28: Ten players each in the under-10 and open category lead the field with all-win record after four rounds in the Bournvita Inter-Schools Chess tournament, conducted by the Kalina Recreation and Sports Club and Mumbai Chess Association at the Don Bosco School, Matunga today.

Raj Parakh of Gokhale High School, Borivli, Ameya Karandikar of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, Sagar Masurekar and Devendre Sathe of Fr. Agnel, Nikhil Bhat of St. Xavier's, Fort, Gaurav Higne of Navi Mumbai School, Vashi, Archis Awate of Sardar Vallabhbhai, Borivli, Sameer Thakkar of Vissanji Academy share the lead with four points in the Open category.

Raj Parakh faced Kaustabh Nilegaonkar in English opening and won after 31 moves. Amar Kamath played the French defence game, used a blunder from opponent Parag Terwadkar to break open the centre and win after 28 moves. The Omkar Kulkarni-Vaibhav Saxena clash on the third board went on for long but the former lost in 48 moves.

In the under-10 section, Rohil Bhat (AbhinavVidyalaya),Akash and Ambar Khalwadekar (Stanislaus), Aditya Vora (Don Bosco), Ishan Nadkarni and Sachin Kamath (Fr. Agnel), Akshay Bhor (IES Kandivli), Niharika Thakkar (Vissanji), Vishal Shah (Joseph's, Malad) and Anand Sutar (Vani Vidyalaya) lead with four points.

In an upset in the u-10 category, fifth seed Ashay Awate lost to Ishan Nadkarni of Fr. Agnel.
