Gohad holds top seed Karnataki

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 29: Number 12 seed Sandeep Gohad pulled out an unexpected draw with top seed Abhay Karnataki in the III round of the boy's section, while in the girls section T Ashwini defeated Amruta Mokal in the under-19 selection tournament organised by Chess Sports Trust for the first time under the auspicies of the Poona District Chess Association at the Manohar Mangal Karyalay here today.

Abhay opened with the Queen's pawn to which Sandeep replied with the Nimzo Indian Defence which was converted into a Queen's Indian set up. After a hard fought struggle a double Rook situation arose after simplification. Sandeep Gohad was a pawn up with one rook each present. However, Sandeep could not profit from this small advantage of Rooks which simplified the position to a theoretical King's and pawn's confrontation ending in a draw.

Ashwini, who has travelled from Sangli district, and a TYBCom student of the Matumai Garware College of Commerce (MGCC) Sangli, leads the table with 3.5 points. Ashwini playing with whites had two Bishops in the middle of the game which was a clear advantage, however, in view of losing pieces in the middle of the game, she resigned.
