Govt turnaround on CVC; single-point directive scrapped
The Centre has reversed its controversial decisions on the Chief Vigilance Commission (CVC) with an amendment ordinance promulgated on Tuesday. The amendments came on the eve of the Supreme Court hearing on a petition challenging the CVC ordinance of August 25 on the grounds that it did not meet the Court's suggestions for the upgradation of the Commission to a statutory body.

Farmers' stir turns violent; six killed
At least six persons were killed--five in police firing and a police official in mob fury--and twelve others received bullet injuries as violence rocked Sira town in Karnataka during a farmers protest on Wednesday, with the incident prompting a state minister to resign.

Task force recommends stringent NBFC norms
The task force on NBFCs has recommended that companies without credit rating be permitted to access public deposits provided they attain a higher capital adequacy ratio of 15%. The panel has also suggested enhanced minimum entry capital, tighter prudential norms alongwith exposure limits for NBFC funds in real estate and capital markets.

Tendulkar tweaks Aussies into submission
Sachin Tendulkar single-handedly propelled India to victory over Australia in their quarter-final clash in the Wills Mini-World Cup at Dhaka yesterday. India, batting first, racked up 307 runs in their 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant 141 by Tendulkar. The Aussies in reply were bowled out for 263, Tendulkar taking 4 wickets for 38 runs.
