CHENNAI Oct 29: Twelve police personnel, including an inspector and a sub-inspector, have been suspended in connection with the recent incident of a 21-year-old housewife committing suicide for allegedly being sexually assaulted at a police station in the city, Police Commissioner P Kalimuthu disclosed at a press conference here today.It may be recalled that the housewife, Chitra, was taken to Aminjikarai police station in connection with a theft case in which her husband was the main accused. However, she committed suicide after she returned from the police station. The Tamil Nadu government has also ordered a CB-CID inquiry into the incident.
Replying to a question, Kalimuthu said so far 53 owners of private finance companies have been arrested for duping depositors and failing to repay deposits on maturity. The amount mobilised by them from the public was Rs 236 crore, he added. Twenty-three owners have been chargesheeted so far. The police have also come across properties worth Rs 165 crore belongingto these owners.
