BAI proposes

BANGALORE: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has sent forward the names of national champions P Gopi Chand and Aparna Popat to represent the country in the December Asian Games at Bangkok.

BAI executive president Prakash Padukone said the government had agreed in principle to send the two shuttlers for the event. However, it was mutually agreed at the monitoring committee meeting yesterday, attended by the Sports Authority of India director general, and chief coach Mohammed Arif, not to send badminton teams for the Games.

Both shuttlers are expected to leave for Bangkok in the second week of December.

Pawar to lead juniors

MUMBAI: Left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar will lead the Mumbai team for the first two matches in the Cooch Behar Trophy cricket tournament to be held at the Wankhede Stadium here and at Rajkot in November.

Mumbai will play Gujarat from November 3 to 5 at Wankhede Stadium and then take on Saurashtra at Rajkot from November 8-10, a Mumbai CricketAssociation (MCA) said here today.

Team:

Rajesh Pawar (capt), Ashutosh Narkar, Sachin Sawant, Vinayak Mane, Rohan Bagade, Sushant Manjrekar, Pushkaraj Jadhav, Viraj Zagade, Nilesh Gawas, Viraj Pai, Darshan Panchal, Swanil Hazare, Rupesh Pawar and Dushyant Kadam.

Training camp

GULMARG: A national team will be selected for Korea Winter Asian Games after a month-long training on the slopes of Gulmarg.

Director general of Jammu and Kashmir tourism Mohammad Ashraf told a press conference that National Winter Sports Association has agreed to organise trials and select about 30 players for a month-long training camp.

He said the team will be selected on December 20, which will represent India in the Winter Asian Games at Korea.

Two meet records

CALCUTTA: Punjab Police emerged the overall champion in the men's section while Central Reserve Police Force took the honours in the women's category as two meet records tumbled on the concluding day of the 47th All-India Police AthleticChampionship at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Punjab Police accumulated 137.5 points to emerge overall champions in the men's section while CRPF had to be content with the second position with 119 points in the four-day meet which saw as many as 16 meet records fall.

CRPF, with 140 points, followed by Punjab Police (114 points) topped in the women's section.

Tandra dead

BHILAI: International powerlifting champion, Tandra Roy Choudhary, expired on October 28 night at Jawaharlal Medical and Research Centre Sector 9 here. She was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure.

Tandra, who participated in various national and international championships, won 15 medals.

Lyallpur in semis

NEW DELHI: Lyallpur Khalsa School, Jalandhar and Army Boys Sport Company (Danapur) recorded contrasting victories over their rivals to storm into the semifinals of the 27th Junior Nehru hockey tournament here today.

In Pool II matches, Jalandhar beat Shivalik Public Chool, Chandigarh 3-0 while Arvind Kumarscored a fine hat-trick to enable Danapur rout local outfit Union Academy 7-1.
