Cong function
The city unit of the Congress has organised a `vandana' programme and a meeting on Saturday to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. While the programme will be held at the Sardar Patel statue, the meeting will be held at 9 am at the Congress office in Makkai Pool. According to a release, city president Thakore Naik will garland Sardar's statue, besides other programmes.

Eye camp
A free eye camp was organised jointly by the Rajput Samaj Pragati Mandal, the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind and the Surat District Co-op Bank Limited on Thursday in Tarsadi village of Kosamba. A release issued by the organisers said at least 50 patients with eye problems ranging from conjunctivitis to cataract were diagnosed at the camp, held at Adarsh School. Also spectacles were provided to the needed at Rs 20 each.

RJP threat
The city unit of the RJP Laghumati Morcha will stage widespread protests in the first week of November to protest against the alleged corruption in providing relief to flood-affected people and police atrocities. Convener Ghulam Memon in a statement blamed the concerned authorities for the delay in distribution of cash doles.

Fine collected
The Entertainment Department recovered fines to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh from several cable-operators for various irregularities following a series of surprise checks conducted at Padra on Wednesday. An official release stated on Thursday that while some operators had failed to pay their quarterly entertainment tax, others not maintained their accounts properly.
