BELLARY, OCT 30: Bellary's baby-lifting case has taken a curious turn with the accused, Zeenathbi, confessing before the police that there was no one with the name Hussainbi (the middle-aged woman who was alleged to have stolen the baby and handed it over to her), and that it had been her figment of imagination. She confessed that she herself had stolen the baby from the hospital.Zeenathbi was arrested and produced before the District and Sessions Judge who released her on bail.
It may be recalled that a 10-day-old baby boy was lifted from the District HQ Hospital on October 22. Police had traced the baby to Zeenathbi's house and restored it to its mother Hulugamma. Zeenathbi had earlier claimed that it was her child. Later, she confessed that `Hussainbi', a vegetable-vendor of Cowl Bazar area, had lifted the baby from HQ Hospital and handed it over to her. Girijapathi, Circle Inspector, who is incharge of the probe said Zeenathbi finally broke down when her father Aziz Sab threatened to commit suicide.Zeenathbi had accompanied the police in their search for Hussainbi. The vegetable-vendors at Cowl Bazar told the police that there was no one by that name engaged in the business.
Thus, the needle of suspicion again pointed towards Zeenathbi, who finally came out with the real story. Girijapathi said in January, Zeenathbi, who was taunted by her mother-in-law and husband for not bearing children, assumed that she was pregnant. Her mother-in-law was happy and so was her husband, who began doting on her. However, when Zeenathbi went for a medical check-up, doctors told her that she was only anemic and not pregnant. But Zeenathbi did not reveal it to anyone, including her husband, for fear of rejection. In fact, she even went through the rituals of Saathva-saa, a ceremony performed in the seventh month of pregnancy. It then struck her that she could lift any baby and claim that it was her own.
Girijapathi said on Oct 22, Zeenathbi after lifting the baby from the district TQ hospital, went to her husband, anauto driver. When he wanted to know how she had a baby in her arms all of a sudden, she replied that she went into labour while she had been to the Makhtum Jaani Dargah (opposite Sangam Talkies) for prayer. Zeenath said a lady who happened to be there had helped her deliver the baby. Hashma, Zeenath's nine-year-old sister who had accompanied her, also confirmed the story.
The husband, overwhelmed with joy, took them home. But once there, she asked him to fetch cow's milk for the baby as she was unable to feed him. On Oct 26, Zeenath's parents threw a feast to their friends and relatives. On the morning of Oct 27, police swooped on their house and took away both Zareena and baby to the HQ Hospital.
Girijapathi said two attenders at the hospital, who were not present on Oct 27 when the baby was restored to Hulugamma, identified Zeenathbi and Hashma as the duo who had visited the hospital.
