NEW DELHI, October 30: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will come out with its final list of candidates for the coming Assembly elections on November 4. ``The core committee will meet again tomorrow, but the final list will only be ready for release on November 4. We decided to delay it by a day,'' state party chief Mange Ram Garg said. However, one issue which has been decided beyond dispute is that Sushma Swaraj is going to contest the election from South Delhi. And the constituency is likely to be R.K. Puram, though a final decision is yet to be taken on this.
While Swaraj's selection is more or less through, it is also certain that neither Sahib Singh Verma nor Mandan Lal Khurana will be contesting the November 25 elections.
In fact, Swaraj had won the last Lok Sabha election from South Delhi, pulling in the highest number of votes among the other six BJP candidates who also won that election. The only Congress candidate that won the last election was Meira Kumar from Karol Bagh.
According to party sources, she would also prefer a South Delhi constituency to any other. The party bosses feel that she is a well-known leader in the area and therefore a secure seat.
Meanwhile, BJP national general secretary and spokesperson Venkaiah Naidu today said the rise in the prices of potato and onion is directly linked to weather conditions. But the Delhi Government has taken steps to import and distribute onions at subsidised prices, he said.
Faced with tough election prospects in three states -- Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh -- a nervous BJP urged its own government to make sure that stringent steps are taken against hoarders and profiteers. The government has been asked to make certain that its godowns are emptied of all the stock and these are then made available to the public.
Naidu blamed the previous Congress and United Front governments for pursuing anti-farmer policies which are responsible for the present crisis and agricultural shortfall. He, however, had to acknowledge that last year's agricultural output had been over-estimated.
