Tashina, Rakhi break records

CHANDIGARH, Oct 30: Three meet record fell by the way side in the women's group on the penultimate day of the All India Inter-University aquatic championship being held at Panjab University Swimming Pool. While Calicut University swimmers continued to dominate in both the men and women sections.

Tashina Singh of Bangalore, who had a poor outing in the meet yesterday, plunged to win the women's 50 metres freestyle event in a new meet record of 29.69. The old meet mark of 29.91 seconds was establish by C Amudha of Madras in 1995. Usha M of Calicut got silver in 30.12 while Patil Dipali of Pune was half-a-stroke behind Usha in 30.75, which got her bronze.

Rakhi Mehra's impeccable style enabled her to triumph in the women's 200 metres backstroke event. Rakhi who clocked the fastest time in the heats (2:51.75), with her smooth and powerful strokes slashed nearly four seconds off the previous record (2:44.72) set by Charu of Anna University in 1997.

Sumy Cyriac of Kottayam took silver in 2:44.78 while Remya V of Calicut, who took the gold five minutes earlier in the 400 metres freestyle race, struggled to win bronze in 2:46.94.

Remya's team mate Sumisha was second in the 400 metres while Sheoja S of Kerala was third.

Calicut women's relay team accounted for the third record of the day. The foursome of Remya V, Usha M, Jomy Thomas and Biji Varghese clocked 5:08.48 seconds to improve upon their own meet record of 5:12 set last year.

Women: 400m freestyle: 1 Remya V (Calicut) 5:01.86, 2 Sumisha S (Calicut) 5:18.30, 3 Sheoja S (Kerala) 5:35.50. 200m backstroke: 1 Rakhi Mehra (Delhi) 2:40.42 (NMR), 2 Sumy Cyriac (Kottayam) 2:44.78, 3 Remya V (Calicut) 2:46.94. 50m freestyle: 1 Tashina Singh (Bangalore) 29.69 (NMR), 2 Usha M (Calicut) 30.12, 3 Patil Dipali (Pune) 30.75. 4 X 100m medey relay: 1 Calicut 5:08.48 (NMR), 2 Kerala 5:24.68, 3 Delhi 5:30.28.
