Parnita Garewal wears golf crown

CHANDIGARH, Oct 30: As expected top Indian lady golfer Parnita Garewal of Chandigarh won the Max India Cup in the sixth Punjab Open Amateur Ladies Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here today. Showing maturity and determination, Parnita aggregated 296. Out of the best four cards during the championship, Parnita had the distinction of winning two. On Day One, she returned one-under par 71 and on the final day today, she carded par 72. For her one-under par the sponsors gave extra incentive of Rs 11,000 to Parnita. There was only one sub-par round in the four-day tournament.

With Parnita winning the crown with ease, an absorbing tussle ensued among overnight contenders Urvashi Sethi Sodhi (306), Shruti Khanna ( and promising Irina Brar for the second place. In a razor sharp contest, Urvashi finished with a steady nett par round while Shruti Khanna faltered. Irina was pipped at the post despite a brilliant birdie on the 18th hole by experienced Nonita Lall Qureshi (308), who finished second runner-up.

Former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and president of the Punjab Cricket Asssociation Inderjit Singh Bindra distributed the prizes.

SPS-44 win
Shivalik Public School-44 beat Government Model Senior School-20 by 3-0 in the Chandigarh state Inter-School under-19 football tournament held at Government Model School in Sector 23.

Neeraj shot twice while Gurpreet Singh scored one for the winners.

In another match of the day, Sanjay Public School-44 defeated Govt Senior Secondary School-19, 2-0.

Govt Model School-33 outplayed Govt High School-37, 2-0. In the last match of the day, DAV-8 scored a 3-0 victory over Govt School, Dhanas.
