Tipu, Tractors forge ahead after shoot-outs

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Oct 31: Rizvi Raza's brace helped Tipu Sultan to upturn a 1-3 deficit into victory that saw them get past Aurangabad DFA 7-6 through a tie-breaker in a first round Mini Rovers Cup football match at the Cooperage today.

In another tie-breaker contest, Mahindra Tractors entered the second round by surpassing Akola DFA 3-1 after both teams were locked goalless at regulation time. Anthony Fernandes, Anthony Powell and Atif Ansari scored for Mahindras. Imran Khan was the only scorer for Akola while the rest wasted their chances.

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, Aurangabad striker stole the show with a fine hat-trick. But his efforts ended in vain as Tipu drew level to take the encounter into a shoot-out.

Earlier, Tipu shot into lead in the very second minute. Shailesh Kotian scored through a powerful right-footer from the top of the box. Four minutes later, Moin drew parity for Aurangabad with a solo effort. At the breather, both teams were leveled at 1-1.

The visitors excelled after thehalf-time by surging ahead mid-way through the session with a Moin solo. He completed his hat-trick couple of minutes later. Snatching a ball near the half-line, he went past a couple of defenders before dispatching a powerful grounder to the right of Tipu goalie Sandesh Mohite.

Spurred by the reverses, Tipu pulled one back within the next two minutes. Raza, younger brother of Air-India forward Abbas Ali Rizvi scored with a powerful shot which deflected off a defender and ballooned over the goal-keeper. The equaliser came few minutes before the final whistle when Hasan Kamal put a through ball to Raza and he neatly placed his shot to the left corner of the net.

Shamsuddin Shah, Rizvi Raza, Aqueel Ansari and Hasan Kamal converted their spot-kicks for Tipu while Shaikh Nadeem, Shaikh Moin and Syed Ahad-ul Haq were the only ones to find the target for Aurangabad.
