MUMBAI, Oct 31: Saurabh Barve is pacing his victories to a nicety. After defeating top seed Raj Parakh, the Sister Nivedita School student, Dombivli has emerged as the sole leader with nine points in the open category with the final round remaining in the Bournvita Inter-Schools Chess Tournament being conducted by the Kalina Recreation Centre and Sports Club and Mumbai Chess Association at the Don Bosco School, Matunga here today.In the under-10 category, Akshay Khalwadekar and Aditya Vora share the lead with nine points. They have been maintaining their position over the last three rounds and the final round will determine the winner in the under-10 category.
On the top board of the open category, Saurabh rejected draw offers from Raj and went on to win in a game of Benoni Opening. In the second board, Srinivas Ramkumar defeated Vaibhav Saxena in 26 moves of an irregular opening. Amar Kamath's brilliant bishop sacrifice in the 15th move in a French Winawer opening helped him win the game againstChaitanya Vaidya.
In the under-10 category, Rohil Bhat and Akash Khalwadekar drew in a closed Sicilian game. Aditya Vora had passed pawns on the B, C, D files and exploited the advantage to win against Ishal Nadkarni. On the third board, Mugdha Variyar and Ashay Awate drew after the latter was an exchange up. Ashay was under time pressure and accepted the draw offer.
