Patankar overcomes pain, Prabhu for title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Oct 31: Despite writhing in pain, Amit Patankar of United Martial Arts Association (UMAA), Mumbai won a long-drawn final against Prabhu Tokiya of Niyuddha, Dadra in the brown belt open kumite of the 4th all-India Karate championship organised by UMAA at Dnyanadeep Vidyalaya, Kanjur Marg here today.

The bout went on for five rounds as neither karateka could score a clear point. Prabhu Tokiya, who impressed on debut, scored with a couple of punches to Patankar's stomach which forced his taller opponent to double up and claim a jikhan (time-out). But Prabhu committed mobibos (foul) with kicks to the groin to annul his advantage.

After the fourth round, Patankar sought a longer time-out to rub down his swollen arms. In that condition, he was keen to let a toss decide the fate of the match as the contest seemed endless. But Prabhu insisted on a final fifth round, to be decided by a golden point.

As luck would have it, Patankar got through Prabhu's defence with a kick to the face.
