Nagpur, Satara triumph

Press Trust of India
Solapur, Oct 31: Defending champions Nagpur and Satara respectively won the men's and women's titles in the Maharashtra Inter-district basketball championship here today.

In the men's final, Nagpur beat Mumbai South-West 64-60 in a keenly contested match. For the winners Shatruguna Gokhale opened the scoring and Sanket Deshpande and Shatruguna combined well in offence.

Tall Mahesh Naidu along with Clarence Menezes repeatedly broke through the Nagpur defence to narrow the margin and even took the lead midway through the second half. The match became very close in the dying moments, but Nagpur, helped by better bench strength, ultimately emerged champions.

In the women's title clash, Satara recorded their third consecutive title win when they beat Nagpur 50-41. Satara had a good beginning but midway through the first half allowed Nilambari Kane to score from the restricted area.

Sonal Kavde controlled the game for Nagpur but tall Anita Handa was a total failure while Gujar sisters, Arnika and Mithila, repeatedly breached Nagpur's defence to keep Satara in the lead.
