MUMBAI, Oct 31: Even as Indian cricketers were outplayed by West Indians at the Wills International Cup at Dhaka, the Mumbai Police this afternoon scooped on a betting den at Malad and arrested seven bookies while they were busy accepting bets relating to the outcome of the cricket match.Acting on a tip off, a special squad this afternoon raided flat No 904, Atlanta Manor, Anmol Co-op Housing Society at Dindoshi Village and arrested the bookies. They also recovered Rs 12,000 cash and other office equipments used for betting.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Param Bir Singh, the seized cash could only be the tip of the iceberg. The actual transactions could be well over Rs 2 crore in credit, Singh added.
Explaining the modus operandi, Singh told The Indian Express that most of the bets are accepted over telephones and from bonafied members of the cartel. The money usually change hands after the match is decided, said Singh.
When the police entered the residence, the men were too busyreceiving bets over six telephone connections. Their eyes were glued to the televisions sets for a ball-by-ball details on the ongoing cricket match, said a police officer.
The police during the raids seized 24 telephone sets, closed circuit cameras, three television sets, five calculators and computer CDs. Also recovered were two telephone speakers and two cellphones.
During investigations it was revealed the racket was masterminded by one Jayantilal Vasantji Furia and his wife Bhavna.The others arrested have been identified as Amish Shah, Rajnikant Shah, Ketan Shah, Ram Kumar and Harush Songanwala.
