VADODARA, Nov 1: Two persons were seriously injured when the delegates of the `Ishu Jivan Darshan' (a religious convention of the Christians) were attacked on Friday morning. The attackers are suspected to be activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.According to Ishwarbhai Diwanjibhai Gamit, one of the injured, the delegates were sleeping in the Adarsh Hindi Vidyalaya -- which they had taken on rent for their lodging during the convention -- when 15 to 20 Gujarati-speaking youths barged in and assaulted them.
Nelson Das of the Alpha Missionary Movement, which organised the function, alleged that VHP activists beat up Pastor Matthew Cheria's wife and another Christian leader when they tried to mediate. He alleged that delegates were taken away in a tempo by VHP activists; some of them, he added, were still missing. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) P K Valera said the incident was sparked off by an FIR filed at Fatehgunj police station by a tribal from Sankheda alleging that he had been forciblyconverted.
