Mundy drives off with title

V Krishnaswamy
NEW DELHI, NOV 1: It was drama all through on the final day of the Honda Siel PGA AGC golf championships. It was Uttam Singh Mundy vs Rafiq Ali till the 14th hole; and then as Rafiq dropped back it became Mundy vs Jyoti Randhawa, who surged from nowhere on the back nine. Mundy dropped two strokes on the last two holes to send the championships into the play-off for the second time.

Play-offs at the AGC don't hold good memories for Randhawa, who saw a Honda car slip away in 1996 in the play-off against American David Carter. As for Mundy, it seemed he was destined to win despite dropping two strokes on the last two holes; missing a two-foot putt that would have given him the title on the third hole of the play-off; and earlier making a curling 12-foot putt on the fourth hole of the play-off to simply survive as Randhawa was just a foot away.

Mundy sank the putt and survived. On the fifth hole of the play-off Randhawa hit his second shot into a fairway tree and then went over the green with his third. Mundywas on the edge after two, and he chipped from there to finish the job and drive away his second Honda car in four years.

Rafiq and Shiv Prakash with one over and par cards respectively ended joint third at 281, while Vijay Kumar was fifth at 282. Daniel Chopra shot his best round in four days. His 68 saw him finish joint sixth with Gaurav Ghei at 286, while Pappan, Amandeep Johl and Jeev Milkha Singh completed the top 10.

Positions: 280: Uttam Singh Mundy (70, 71, 68, 71); Jyoti Randhawa (71, 70, 68, 71); 281: Rafiq Ali (73, 70, 65, 73), Shiv Prakash (71, 69, 69, 72); 282: Vijay Kumar (72, 69, 69, 72); 286: Gaurav Ghei (73, 72, 71, 70), Daniel Chopra (75, 70, 73, 68); 287: Amandeep Johl (70, 73, 74, 70); 289: Pappan (71, 73, 72, 73), Jeev Milkha Singh (72, 71, 74, 72), Mukesh Kumar (73, 73, 72, 71); 290: Basad Ali (73, 72, 72, 73), Amritinder Singh (71, 73, 75, 71); 291: Ali Sher (72, 72, 74, 72); 292: Mohd.
