CHANDIGARH, Nov 1: A strange case of a student appearing in a Punjab University examination from a centre located in a different City from the examination centre actually allotted to him has been detected.Coupled with this is a complaint filed by the assistant superintendent of the examination centre, who has alleged various malpractices. He has also filed a complaint with the local police alleging that an attempt was made to inflict physical harm on him and that he was being coerced to withdraw the allegations of unfair means against the student. The deputy superintendent has also charged that an answer book was placed before the said candidate to help him attempt the questions.
The university which initially removed the centre superintendent has now constituted a committee to look into the case.
What is surprising about the incident is that a student could walk into an examination centre and appear in the examination without having a roll number. Also related to this is the issue of provision of security to employees who conduct the examination. The student got his form attested from Khalsa College, Mahilpur for appearing in BA (III) English exam and listed Mahilpur as his centre preference. Since he was not present at the examination centre, his result was declared as "Absent".
However, his answersheet was received from Hoshiarpur which was evaluated by the secrecy branch of the university. The candidate has written to the university stating that he appeared at the Hoshiarpur centre and the centre superintendent accepted his candidature as a "stray case". The candidate has stated that he did not receive his roll number, and since he did not have a roll number he went to Hoshiarpur and requested the centre superintendent who allowed him to appear.
The official note of the university states that although the candidate says that he did not receive the roll number, "he never contacted the office for a duplicate roll number before commencement of the examination". Each candidate is allowed two preferences for the examination centre, and he listed Mahilpur in both the columns. Yet he appeared at Hoshiarpur. The centre superintendent in his letter to the university says that he followed the university rules which grant him power to satisfy the bonafide of the candidate and allow him to appear.
