Net gain for private players
Announcing a set of measures that would boost the information technology sector, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said on Sunday that the Centre is planning a customer-friendly Internet policy which will throw open Internet operations to private agencies. The measures, he said, will allow 49 percent foreign equity in joint ventures with Indian Internet service providers.
No oomph in US polls, no Monica either
The United States goes into a midterm election on Tuesday with a largely apathetic electorate unmoved by the sex scandal involving President Clinton and only marginally provoked by the media-charged political atmosphere. But for the barrage of advertising on television and radio, there is little sign of electioneering anywhere across this vast country.
Russia passes crisis plan after IMF rebuff
Russia on Saturday approved an economic recovery plan which has already been rejected by the International Monetary Fund for shifting away from free markets. Russian prime minister Yevgeny Primakov defended the measures, which he hopes will haul Russia out of financial crisis.
