Kallis, Cronje choke Caribbean bid
South Africa defeated West Indies by 4 wickets yesterday to lift the Wills International Mini World Cup. Batting first, West Indies could manage only 245 runs before being bowled out in the 50th over. South Africa overhauled the target in the 47th over, skipper Hansie Cronje staying unbeaten on 61.

Sampras up as Gambill pulls out
World No. 1 Pete Sampras moved into the semi-final of the Eurocard Open in Stuttgart yesterday when his opponent, American Jan-Michael Gambill retired with a foot injury in the first set. Sampras now faces Dutchman Richard Krajicek in the semi-final. The other semi-final will see Yevgeny Kafelnikov clash with Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden.

Anand scores quick-fire win over Korchnoi
India's Vishwanathan Anand scored a swift 19-move win over Viktor Korchnoi of Switzerland on Sunday to strengthen his stranglehold on the Tilburg International Grandmasters chess tournament with three more rounds to go. The world No 3 Indian Grandmaster has the tournament virtually sewn up as he tamed Korchnoi, who employed a rather strange opening, with ease and maintained his lead with six points from eight games.
