Kumaramangalam promises upgradation of power supply in Western India

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, Nov 4: The Central Government is working at improving the power infrastructure in Maharashtra, Union Minister for Power Rangarajan Kumaramangalam said here today.

The minister who is here to chair the meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee on power told mediapersons that the government is working on a programme to enhance power generation capacity in Maharashtra.

Details for funding the project by the Power Finance Corporation are still being worked out, the minister said.

Kumaramangalam said the project would enable the installation of a dedicated power line from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, providing uninterrupted power supply to Goa, the minister said.

Kumaramangalam also brushed aside the state government's plan to sell unutilised power to private parties. He noted that under the Gadgil formula, Goa, which is giving up unused power because it does not have the infrastructure to wheel it down, is not in a position to sell this power. The government, he said, would have to invest ininfrastructure to wheel down the power before selling it to a private party. ``They cannot ask me to sell it for them,'' he said.

The government of Goa has for long been contemplating selling its allocation of unutilised power to a private operator at a profit of 10 paise per unit. This revenue thus earned was to be ploughed back into the power sector.
