Pak shock World champions

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
LAHORE, Nov 4: A young Pakistan side shocked Holland 5-3, handing the World and Olympic champions their first defeat in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament here today.

But Holland still leads the points table in the six-team competition with nine points.

With two draws and a defeat on the points chart, the relatively inexperienced Pakistan forwards showed a much better combination against the strong Dutch defence and scored four field goals.

Anis Ahmed scored twice and Atif Bashir and Muhammad Sarwar found the target with angular shots. Sohail Abbas netted Pakistan's fifth goal off a penalty corner in the 53rd minute.

``It's a great feeling to beat such a strong team as Holland,'' said captain Muhammad Usman.

``We played as a well-knit unit and availed our chances,'' said Usman, whose team now has five points from four games with a match against Germany to play.

Holland, which enforced penalty corner specialist Bram Lomans, could score only two goals from ten short corners while MartenEikelboom was on target once.

The match started off at a fast pace with Eikelboom's strong reverse flick smartly stopped by Pakistan custodian Muhammad Qasim in only the third minute.

Pakistani forwards had their chances too, but those were spurned by Bashir and Anis. Bashir finally drove home when he calmly placed the ball to the left of goalkeeper Ronald Janssen in the 21st minute.

Three minutes later, Anis doubled the lead with a diving effort from the right, once again defeating Dutch captain Janssen under the crossbar.

However, in a counterattack, Eikelboom scored on an accurate pass by Remco van Wijk and Pakistan led 2-1 at half-time.

Sarwar's powerful shot from the top of the circle put his team 3-1 ahead three minutes into the second half while Lomans converted his team's sixth penalty corner in the 41st minute.

Pakistan went up 4-2 in the 61st minute when Abbas scored off a penalty corner while Anis scored his second goal in the 61st minute off a brilliant field effort from theright.

Holland could snatch only one more goal through Lomans' 64th-minute strong push off his team's 9th short corner.
