The campaign, which will be held from November 25 to December 10, will be commemorative of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It will focus on domestic violence and women's legal rights and attempt to influence public opinions and attitudes, policies, practices and legislation, to facilitate a life free of violence for women and girl children in the region.

In India, the campaign will run across several cities and major towns like Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Lucknow, Bangalore, Itanagar, Guwahati, Madurai, Dindugal and Trichy. A range of activities like symposia, meetings, debates, film screenings, rallies, marches, poster and signature campaigns, will be organised duringthe 16 days.

Educational institutions, Residents Welfare Associations, NGOs, women's groups and clubs will be active partners in the campaign. UNFPA, UNICEF and the UN Resident Coordinators' Office will be supporting and collaborating with UNIFEM in this global campaign.

During the campaign, gender sensitization workshops for police personnel from 100 police stations in Delhi, in close collaboration with the office of the Commissioner of Police, and a Gender Training Institute will be held on November 9 and 10.

There will also be an awareness generation programme, through posters on the legal rights of women, vis-a-vis all the police stations in India. These posters are being developed by MARG, a specialist NGO.
