Paramjit `breaks' Milkha's record
Even as Paramjit Singh hogged the limelight with a scintillating run in the 400 metres for men at the Open nationals in Calcutta today, Bahadur Singh, raised visions of Asian Games medal with a national mark in men's shot put. After Paramjit `eclipsed' Milkha Singh's 38-year old national record of 45.73 seconds set in the '60 Rome Olympic Games with a timing of 45.70 seconds, Shakti Singh's latest national record of 19.38 metres in this event, created at the Mumbai Circuit Meet, did not last even a fortnight as Bahadur Singh dwarfed that with a throw of 19.59 metres. Shakti Singh too put all his might behind the iron ball with a throw of 19.47 metres, his best so far.

Record stands
Milkha Singh will stand by his promise to give Rs 2 lakh to anyone who broke his record. "I am not going back on my word of giving Rs 2 lakh to whoever breaks my timing of the Rome Olympics. I still stand by it. But my record was 45.6, and I don't recognise the changed electronic timings. Anyway, I'll clarify the timings from the officials,'' said the Flying Sikh, in Delhi to play in the Pro-Am event of the Hero Honda Masters golf tournament.

Pakistan win
Mohammad Anis scored two goals and set up another to thrust hosts Pakistan to their first victory at the six-nation Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Lahore. Pakistan the Netherlands 5-3 in the only match on the fifth day.
