MUMBAI, NOV 5: Maharastra State Police came back strongly from a one goal deficit to enter the quarter-finals of the Mini Rovers Cup football tournament at the Cooperage today. MSP drubbed Nagpur DFA 4-1 and play Hyderabad XI on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.Medio Debabrata Chakraworty stunned the policemen with a 27th minute volley from close range. Mid-fielder Tajuddin's free-kick found Chakraborty who managed to send a cross but got possession again off a defender's header. The tiny medio bulged the net with a side volley. But that was all the visitors got to cheer as MSP's Xavier Bernard drew parity a minute before the breather. Play-maker Abdul Abid put Bernard through on the right flank and the latter unleashed a low shot into the far corner.
MSP took lead with a powerful low volley executed by their defender Kevin Joseph. After a faulty clearance, Joseph latched on to a lose ball and the power-packed shot went straight into the far corner.
The policemen increased the lead to 3-1 whenBernard's left-footer from the top of the box entered the goal. Abid, from the right, crossed the ball to Laxman Thakur who sent the ball to Bernard.
Substitute Baban Parve added the fourth for the policemen a minute after when he replaced Anil Shinde. Parve carried the ball over 25 yards and then placed it to the right of Shahid Ansari, the Nagpur goalkeeper.
The match was evenly contested only for the first 15 minutes. Thereafter, MSP started controlling the game and made many inroads into the Nagpur defence. But the MSP strikers were off target initially as they were not able to co-ordinate. But once Thakur, Bernard and Nimai Roy found their touch, they were unstoppable with their overheads and defence splitting passes.
