Paramjit anchors 4x400 gold

Saibal Bose
CALCUTTA, NOV 5: Paramjit Singh was at it again, today. After breaking Milkha Singh's 38-year-old record in 400m yesterday, Paramjit anchored the Amateur Athletics Federation of India's 4x400 metres relay team to create another national record at the Salt Lake Stadium.

More importantly, the quartets of Lijjo David, Ramachandran, Jata Shankar and Paramjit Singh timed under the AAFI set target to qualify for the Bangkok Asiad.

The AAFI team timed 3:04.91 seconds as against the target of 3:05.00 seconds. The previous national record of 3:06.09 seconds was created at the Asian Track and Field meet in Fukuoka earlier this year by the same team.

That apart, assistant sub inspector of Punjab Police Sahib Singh left no doubts about who is best in 400m hurdles for men. He bettered that mark today.

The women's 4x400m relay team, sans PT Usha, too qualified for the Asiad with a better-than-target time of 3:38.08 seconds. The target was kept at 3:37.76 seconds.

Amit Khanna of FCI won the re-run 100 metres formen with a timing of 10.64 seconds.
