SHARJAH, Nov 6: Ajit Agarkar gave eloquent testimony of his batting potential when he turned a near certain Indian defeat into victory as they beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in the three-nation Coca-Cola Cup cricket championship, here, tonight. When Agarkar came in to bat at the fall of the seventh wicket (Nikhil Chopra), India needed 29 runs in 24 balls. But Agarkar plundered 15 runs -- including a six -- in the 47th over bowled by Kumara Dharmasena to tilt the balance.
India needed 12 off the final two overs, but Agarkar blasted another six in the penultimate over -- the ball grazing Jayasuriya's hand in the deep and going over the ropes. The lapse proved costly for Lanka as India needed just two in the last over, which they achieved without any trouble.
India were well served by skipper Mohammed Azharuddin (94) and Nayan Mongia (51) who held the innings together in crisis. Earlier, Sri Lanka failed to capitalise on the 79-run opening wicket stand by their openers.
