Calcutta, NOV 6: Reverting its decision, Trinamool Congress on Friday announced pulling out of the Assembly election in Delhi saying funds crunch prompted the move. Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee, who had announced on Thursday that her party would contest two seats in Delhi, told newsmen here on Friday that her party could not put up candidates in Delhi due to financial constraints. But she said her party would extend ``total'' support if any ``good'' Independent candidate sought it in Delhi.Trinamool Congress, however, would contest two seats in Rajasthan on its own, Banerjee said. When pointed out that Trinamool Congress was fielding candidates against BJP, she quiped, ``other allies are also there''.
Banerjee recently quit the coordination committee of the BJP and its allies in protest against Vajpayee government's ``failure'' to check prices rise.
OVER 2,500 file nomination: Chief Ministers of Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram were among the estimated 2,500candidates who filed their nomination papers for Assembly elections which closed today.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh and a number of his ministerial colleagues were among the estimated 1,247 candidates who filed their papers on the concluding day, seeking a berth in the 320-member Assembly.
For the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and 450 other candidates filed nominations, taking the total number of aspirants to 1,313, according to latest official figures available.
In Delhi, Chief Minister and BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and State Congress President Sheila Dixit were among the estimated 500 candidates who filed nominations for the 70-member Assembly.
For the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, Chief Minister and Congress leader Lalthanhawla, main Opposition leader Zoramthanga of Mizo National Front and the `dark horse' United Parliamentary Party leader Lalduwama joined the fray with 262 others. There were some cases of revolt by those who, having beendenied party tickets, jumped into the fray as Independents against the official candidates of BJP and Congress in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Scrutiny of the nominations will be held on November 7, while the last date for withdrawal is November nine. Balloting in the four states is slated for November 25.
Polling in by-elections for Broach Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat, three Assembly seats in West Bengal and one each in Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, would also be held on November 25.
