PATIALA, Nov 6: The three-day district Red Cross Mela got off to a grand start at the Baradari Gardens here today. It was an atmosphere of fun and festivity at the place which had been tastefully decorated and given a facelift.The Mela attracted a large number of visitors during the day and the crowds swelled later in the evening with people dressed in their colourful best turning up despite the mild chill in the air.
A group of young girls dressed in traditional Punjabi costumes were the star attraction as they went round the household chores in a village-like atmosphere recreated in the Mela with a small muddy structure raised there.RPS Pawar, commissioner of Patiala Division, who inaugurated the Mela said that such events played a key role in reminding the people of rich cultural heritage of Punjab.
Pamela Pawar, wife of the commissioner and president of the Hospital Welfare section of the Red Cross Society, said that proceeds from the Mela stalls would be utilised for the welfare of the needy and poor.
Surinder Kaur Grewal, chairperson of the Women Welfare Commission Punjab, who is also honorary secretary of the Society, also spoke on the occasion.
