Openers Aakash Chopra and Ashu Dani were dismissed within one run of each other in the eighth and ninth over of the innings. Chopra followed an inswinger into the wicketkeeper's gloves while Dani's square cut off left-arm pacer Parveen was taken well at point.

In-form Ajay Sharma made a quickfire 34 (53m, 33b) with the help of two fours before getting an inner edge to a Parveen inswinger. Manhas (17: 2x4, 25b) and Akash Malhotra (coming in place of Sandeep Angurala) with four were together at close.

Rain plays spoilsport

NEW DELHI: Unseasonal rains allowed only 57 minutes of play on the first day in the four-day Central Zone league match between Railways and Vidarbha at the Karnail Singh Stadium.

Only 13.1 overs could be bowled in which Vidarbha made 13 for one before the umpires called off play.

Karnataka in command

TIRUNELVELI: Capped by a fine century (171) from Vijay Bharadwaj and his record 134 stand for sixth wicket with Anand Katti (68 batting), Karnataka played themselves into a strong position at 390 for seven in the first innings at stumps on the second day of the four day South Zone Ranji Trophy league match against Tamil Nadu here today.

Bharadwaj's knock ended when he was snapped up by Vasant Saravanan at short mid-wicket off medium pacer Kumaran for 171 (522m, 377b).

Goa struggle

PANAJI: Goa were in dire straits, losing seven wickets for 78 runs in reply to Andhra Pradesh's 216 in the first innings. Play had to bestopped at the tea due to unseasonal rains on the second day of the four-day South Zone match at the Gymkhana Ground. Sudin Kamat and Sandesh Dhuri were the not out batsmen with 11 runs a piece, still needing 138 runs to surpass the visitors' total. Andhra medium pacers H Ramkishan and Madhusudhan Raju wrecked Goa's batting with three wickets a piece.
