Fr Agnel, Hyderabad break into quarters

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, NOV 7: Fr Agnel and Hyderabad XI entered the quarter-finals of the Mini Rovers Cup today, winning via tie-breakers, at the Cooperage today.

Fr Agnel got past Nalco SC (Orissa) 5-4 while Hyderabad XI entered the quarters beating Maharashtra State Police 7-6 via sudden death.

Agnel, the team from Vashi, will take on Central Railway, Mumbai, while Hyderabad will meet Oil India (Guwahati) on Monday.

In the first encounter between Nalco and Agnel, the visitors started with a promising note as they controlled the game and scored a minute before breather. But their strikers were guilty for missing more than half a dozen chances.

Defender Shaikh Mansoor put the visitors ahead with a side volley off Samaptendu Meher's cross from the right wing.

A silly mistake by Nalco defender Durga Hembrum brought the equaliser for the Western India Football Association Senior Division team. Medio Eusebio Mascarenhas' left-foot snap shot was going straight towards the goal when Durga handled the ball near the smallbox. Referee Anjulo Fernandes pointed to the spot and medio Prasanjit converted.

It was Nalco's strikers who cost them the match. Visitors medio functioned well and the defence played a supportive role for attack.

In the middle of the first half, Shaikh Sajjad put a parallel to Santosh Rao in the box. After controlling the ball, he tried to place to the left of 'keeper Ashwin Martis who brought a fine save.

After the breather, Nalco had two more scoring chances. Rao and Shakti Singh's powerful shots forced Martis again to bring off airborne saves. The second match had better football than the first. The Hyderabad team was impressive from the beginning. In the first 25 minutes, they created half a dozen good opportunities.

Striker Jaleel and Anand missed sitters from close range. They were unsuccessful in keeping their placements within the woodwork when they had only the custodian to beat.

MSP were unlucky as Hyderabad defender Manibhushan's clearance on the goal mouth bounced off MSP striker AbdulFiam and went towards the goal. But the visitors were lucky as it touched the post and went out.

Both teams played in patches during the second-half. But Jaleel missed the easiest of chances for Hyderabad. He escaped an off-side trap but only to see his shot fly over.

In the dying minutes of the match, MSP also had a chance when medio Nimai Roy's 25-yard shot was fisted out by Appanna.

After both the teams played a goalless regulation time, the tie-breaker was applied.

For Hydrabad XI, Safi, Umai Nandan, Jaleel, Manibhushan and S Raju converted their chances while Abdul Abid, Kevin Joseph and Suryakant Kamane were among the scorers for MSP.
