Russia, Cuba on target

REUTERS
TOKYO, Nov 8: Title holders Cuba and top-ranked Russia stayed on course for a final showdown with more easy wins in their quarter-final groups in the Women's Volleyball World Championship today. Cuba and Russia led their respective groups after the second series of matches in the two six-team round-robin groups. Cuba, the 1992 and 1996 Olympic champions, had too much speed and power for Asia Champions China whom they beat 15-6 15-8 15-11.

``We played our style of volleyball. But we'll need to step it up in the semifinal,'' Cuban coach Antonio Perdomo forecast.

Russia, ranked one despite Cuba's unbeaten record in major championships through the 1990s, took just an hour to beat Peru 15-2 15-9 15-6.
