CALCUTTA, Nov 8: A Kazakhstan team which brought only eight members because of finance crunch packed enough ammunition to send a full-blooded Korean team out of contention for the knock-out round in the 15th Asian Basketball Confederation Championships for junior men here today. The Kazakhs ruined fancied Korea's chances by a slender 79-78 margin in extra time. At the end of scheduled time, the teams were tied at 69.China, Qatar, Japan, Chinese Taipei, had qualified on Saturday. The Philippines, Kazakhstan, Iran and Malaysia complete the quarter-final line-up.
Iran brushed aside Lebanon 97-63 and became the second team to make the quarter-finals from Group A after holders China. Lebanon were a pale shadow of the team that defeated China. Hosts India who have improved with every game, held their own for all of ten minutes before Qatar took over and finished 79-58 victors to maintain an all-win record in group B. The other qualifier from the group was Malaysia who defeated Pakistan 72-57 in the last leagueengagement.
The Indians needed to pull off an upset victory over Qatar to keep their quarter-final hopes alive and that was a tall order indeed. Captain S Robinson who has been growing in confidence with each outing, singlehandedly scored 21 points. The team however needed another long-range shooter and a player who could hover in the forward line and pick up the loose balls left by the Qatar forwards. Kazakhstan and Korea were neck and neck for a greater part of the game.
Knowing the Koreans were shorter, the Kazakhs refrained from playing an outside game. Park Seong-Uk, Korea's 194 cm tall guard, fought valiantly while Oh Yun Jun thrilled the crowd with his dribbling skills and ball control but ultimately it was not enough. Trailing 33-39 at lemon time, the Koreans chased the Kazakh total and less than a minute from regulation time, Park drove in for a basket and successfully converted one free throw and missed one to level at 69.The game went into extra minutes.
The Kazakhs led 77-76 with forty sixseconds left. Kim Dong Uk got a vital basket for Korea but missed both free throws when fouled by Issakov. That proved a costly miss as seven seconds from the whistle Semyonov sent the ball crashing into the hoop.
