MARGAO, Nov 8: Salgaocar Football Club defeated Churchill Brothers 2-0 and kept their chances of winning the title alive in the Director's Special Professional League at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, here today.Errors by Churchill Bros custodian Edward Ansah and defender Anthony Mathews helped Salgaocar win. Bruno Coutinho scored both the goals in second half (56th and 62nd minute).
With this win, Salgacoar took their total tally to 17 points from seven matches to top the table. They are followed by Dempo with 15 points from as many matches. Churchill Bros are at third position with 13 points from four wins, two losses and one draw. Salgacoar who will play their last match against Dempo on November 15, need only a draw to lift the title. Dempo need a win to clinch the title.
Knowing today's match was crucial for both teams, Churchill Bros started in right earnest dictating terms in the midfield with Mahesh Singh, Aqueel Ansari and Mario Soares spraying passes to the men upfront.
On the other hand,Salgacoar midfield failed to combine. In the upfront Sabir Mondal failed to combine along with Jude Odegah. As a result their attack lacked teeth in the upfront. It was only in the second half when Bruno who replaced Mondal did their attack look sharp and in a span of five minutes he scored two goals.
