Campus violence forces Aligarh varsity closure

ALIGARH, Nov 8: Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor Mahmoodur Rahman on Saturday ordered its closure after Wednesday's campus violence. As many as eight junior doctors were injured when armed men raided their mess to disrupt a strike at the Jawaharlal Medical College.The closure order also asks students to vacate hostels. Hundreds of students held a protest rally against the V-C's decision. A Joint Action Committee has been formed, said Khalid Anees Ansari, a management student. So far, the agitation was confined to the Junior Doctors' Organisation (JDO), but other students have joined in, he added. Eight junior doctors were injured when men armed with country-made guns, bombs and chains raided the junior doctors' mess. As word of the attack spread, students went on a rampage, ransacking and setting fire to Pro-Vice-Chancellor H A S Jafri's house and the proctor's office.
