Slight vote swing may be clincher for MP Govt

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BHOPAL, Nov 8: A swing of two to three per cent in votes may cause a major difference in the final tally of seats to be won by the main rivals, the Congress and BJP, in forthcoming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh and prove decisive in formation of the new government as in previous two elections.

A swing of just 1.98 per cent votes in favour of Congress during November 1993 Assembly polls provided it 174 seats -- 57 more than the BJP, out of a total of 320 Assembly seats.

A 5.47 per cent swing in favour of BJP in the February 1990 Assembly polls had given it a two-third majority with 219 seats, reducing the Congress to just 57 in the House.

As against 40.74 per cent of total votes polled by Congress, BJP polled 38.76 per cent votes securing 117 seats in the last Assembly polls.

The BSP had emerged as a third force in the state polling 7.06 per cent votes to get 11 Assembly seats although its 235 of the 287 candidates could not even save their security deposits.

The Janata Dal had won four seatspolling 3.90 per cent votes and 234 out of its 260 votes lost their deposits in the 1993 polls.

Riding the strong anti-Congress wave in 1990 Assembly polls, the BJP polled 39.93 per cent votes securing a two-third majority with 219 seats in the state.

The Congress bagging 33.56 votes had to settle for only 57 seats.

It was the worst performance of Congress in any Assembly poll since the creation of the state in 1956.

Earlier in 1985, the Congress swept the Assembly elections in the wake of a sympathy wave following assassination of former premier Indira Gandhi, polling 48.87 per cent votes to get a massive 250 seats. The BJP got 58 seats with 32.47 per cent votes.

The Congress had formed the government after the 1980 Assembly polls also benefitting from the anti-Janata Party mood when it got 246 seats with 47.51 per cent votes. The then newly-formed BJP had secured only 60 seats polling 30.34 per cent votes.

In 1977 Assembly polls, the Janata Party had won a majority with 230 seats in the stateAssembly getting 47.28 per cent votes. The Congress with 35.88 per cent votes had got 84 seats.

The Congress had formed the government in 1972 with 220 seats getting 48.14 per cent votes while the then Jana Sangh candidates were elected in 48 Assembly seats polling 28.46 per cent votes.

In the 1967 mini-general elections, the Congress had bagged 167 seats in the 296-member Assembly while the Jana Sangh which got 28.28 per cent votes had to be content with 78 seats.

The Congress had emerged a winner in 1962 Assembly polls also with 142 seats securing 38.54 per cent votes while the Jan Sang bagged 41 seats with 16.66 per cent votes.

The then Praja Socialist Party secured 10.72 per cent votes and got 33 seats in the state Assembly.

In the first Assembly polls in the newly-formed Madhya Pradesh in 1957, the Congress had won 232 out of 288 seats wit 49.80 per cent votes while the Jan Sangh with 9.80 per cent votes had bagged 10 and the Praja Socialist Party getting 13.10 per cent votes had won 12 seats.
