CHANDIGARH, Nov 8: A High Speed Data Communication (HSDC) facility was inaugurated at the Software Technology Park at the Punjab Engineering College here today.Inaugurating the facility, Ravindra Gupta, secretary, Department of Electronics, hoped the City would emerge as one of the major centres of Information Technology in the country. The STP complex has been provided by the Administration for small and medium units for software development and export. The complex now provides point to point leased lines ranging from 64Kbps to 2Mbps speeds, apart from facilities like world-wide web remote login, file transfer protocol and e-mail.
Later, speaking at a seminar on "IT policy and its impact on software exports", Gupta stated that the department of electronics is proposing the creation of a national network with facilities being provided to nearly 700 apex institutes of the country. The network would be provided with a high speed data link and would also be used for distance education.
This would include the IITs, and the universities and some technical institutes. Later the network would be extended to polytechnics also.
Home Secretary Anuradha Gupta mentioned the space constraints in the industrial belt in the city. Adviser to the Administrator, Jagdish Sagar, formally launched North India Software Companies Association (NISCA). He tried to dispel the notion that the City was over-crowded. Half of the industrial centre in Sector 34 and 43 is still to be developed for commercial and institutional use.
