Mishaps
Batala: An unidentified man was crushed under a train near Chhina village on the Amritsar-Pathankot section, today. His body was cremated by the local municipal council after a post mortem examination was conducted at the civil hospital, here. It was not immediately known whether it was a case of suicide or an accident case. The local railway police have registered a case in this connection.Moga: One person was killed and another seriously injured when the car in which they were returning to the town from Buttar village on Moga-Barnala road, rammed into a tree near Dala village last night, reports today said. According to family sources of the seriously injured, the accident took place when the driver of the ill-fated car lost control in an attempt to overtake another vehicle and rammed into a road-side tree. The driver died on the spot, while the seriously injured was rushed to a local private hospital. The car was badly damaged.
Election
Moga: Nasib Bawa, advocate, has been elected president of the Moga Bar Association for the seventh time. During the bar association elections yesterday, Bawa secured 53 votes, whereas his nearest rival Balwinder Singh secured 45 votes out of a total of hundred votes. For the post of vice-president, Love Arora defeated his nearest rival Pardeep Bharati by a margin of 14 votes. Vaneet Jaidka was elected general secretary of the bar association and Ashok Sharma as finance secretary.
Industry
Moga: Union Minister of State for Industries S S Badal today hoped the proposed Rs 16000-crore oil refinary in Bathinda district will be the beginning of an industrial revolution in Punjab after the green and white revolutions. Addressing the SAD and BJP workers from all over the district of Faridkot at Kotkapura near here yesterday evening, Badal claimed that he had got cleared various industrial projects worth Rs 23000 crore including the oil refinery and urea fertiliser project at Sangrur and the HMT extension project at S.A.S. Nagar. Even Mahindera and Mahindera, an industrial house of Bombay has also agreed to set up its unit in Punjab, he revealed. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee will lay the foundation stone of the prestigious project on November 13.
Licences
Sangrur: The district transport officer, Sangrur, on Friday launched the ``No Delay'' Scheme to facilitate licence seekers and registration of vehicles. Persons seeking learner's driving licences have been asked to directly approach the DTO to get the same within half an hour. Similarly, vehicle registrations would be done in half an hour. For issuing regular driving licence, the concerned person will have to directly approach the officer and special camps would be launched in various parts of the district for the convenience of the general public. Two such camps at Rup Kalean and Bhawanigarh have already been launched, the DTO office sources revealed. Friday has been fixed for the driving licences, Wednesday for registration of vehicles and Monday for the marking of various related documents.
Curfew
Gurdaspur: District Magistrate S. K. Sandhu has ordered imposition of night curfew to check movement of the general public along railway lines, canals, distributaries and the Dhussi bandh of river Beas falling in district Gurdaspur, up to an area of 150 feet. Coming into force immediately, these orders will remain in force up to January 2, 1999. The district magistrate has also banned the use of pressure horns by motor vehicles in the district till January 2, 1999.
Strike
Shimla: The Resident Doctors' Association of Indira Gandhi Medical College has decided to withdraw its call for an indefinite strike from November 20, following talks with Health Minister J P Nadda. The minister has directed the Secretary, Health, to expedite the issue of revised pay-scales for the doctors on the Punjab pattern.
Charge
Shimla: HPU Vice-Chancellor C. L. Kundu has appointed S. C. Chaudhary as Dean of Studies in addition to his own duties as Dean, Students Welfare, till further orders.
