Newly-married couple sustains serious burns in S-W Delhi

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 8: A couple suffered serious burns under mysterious circumstances in their one-room Pappankalan house at around 6 pm today. Soni, 19, had married Radhey recently. An empty bottle of kerosene was recovered from the spot. Soni sustained 90 per cent burns and Radhey, 40 per cent. The couple have been admitted to the Safdarjung hospital.

Additional Station House officer of the Dabri Police Station Ombir Singh told Express Newsline: ``The two come from families with an economically weak background. As their parents could not get them married in the traditional way, with the usual pomp and show, the couple had a court marriage a few months ago''.

Radhey had apparently taken a room on rent as they did not want to live with his parents who live in the same locality. Singh said, ``The investigating officer of the case is still at Safdarjung Hospital. Soni is unfit for statement. The SDM will be visiting her tonight. However, the prima facie evidence available does not indicate foul play. All we found at the spot was an empty bottle of kerosene. We have not been able to determine the sequence of events as yet''.

A neighbour apparently informed the police control room of the incident this evening. The PCR staff rushed the couple to the hospital. The Dabri police have reportedly recorded the statements of Soni's parents who say that they had no ongoing squabble with Radhey and that he and their daughter got along well.
