AHMEDABAD, Nov 9: The Centralised Admissions of Gujarat State for Medical, Engineering and Pharmacy degree and diploma courses began here on Monday. Interestingly, in the admission process this year, all the Central Board students who have applied in the reserved categories of Scheduled Tribe (ST), Socially and Economically Backward Communities (SEBC) and Physically Handicapped will get admissions in either of the three courses. In the Scheduled Caste category, 25 students from Central Board have applied for the three available seats. In Engineering and Pharmacy also more Scheduled Caste students have applied than the available seats.
The Central Board students will be given admission in the first three days. Around 300 students will be interviewed everyday and asked to select their faculty and college. As many as 903 Central Board students are eligible for admissions in the State this year. Due to the Supreme Court ruling this year there is absolute reservation for SEBC category students and thus the total number of seats for them has increased over the last year. There are 13 seats in Medical, Dental and Physiotherapy in Gujarat for SEBC Central Board students and 18 applications have been received.
Since a few are likely to choose Engineering faculty, all the SEBC students are likely to be accommodated in the field of their choice. And there are 49 SEBC applicants for Engineering and Pharmacy colleges together when there are 60 seats in Engineering colleges alone. Surplus SEBC seats will be converted to open category.
In the category of Scheduled Tribe, there are only six applicants and there are six seats in Medical and Dental so all will get admissions. In Engineering and Pharmacy, there are 12 applicants and the number of available seats in Engineering colleges alone are 32. So the surplus seats will be converted to Nomadic Tribe (NT) and De-Nomadic Tribe (DNT) and if there are further vacancies, they will be converted to open category.
In the category of Physically Handicapped (Orthopadically) there are four seats in Engineering against two applicants. In the category of ex-servicemen, there are 149 applicants and only a one seat available in Engineering college. The first day of admission was a slow one due to multiple choices to each candidate. Each candidate and their guardians were seen taking a lot of time to decide their choice of college and faculty which delayed the process considerably.
The admission process, however, was conducted peacefully and systematically. All the medical college admission for the Central Board students were closed down on the first day itself. The quota of Central Board students for this year's admission was 4.8 per cent.
