Child labour meet begins in city
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Nov 9: A two-day seminar `Child Labour in Gujarat: Image, realities and interventions', organised by the Centre for Social Studies with monetary assistance from UNICEF, began at the CSS premises here on Monday with participants feeling that a lot needed to be done about the evil, which is all pervasive. The introductory sessions outlined the need for identifying the region and specific areas where child labour was rampant in Gujarat; to identify the role of civil society groups like family, community, school system and non-government organisations; assess the role of public authorities and state machinery; to strengthen the mechanism to progressively eliminate child labour; and to find out along with economic causes socio-cultural reasons behind the menace. As many as 12 papers touching various aspects of the menace were presented during the course of discussion followed by case studies by Rajnikant Sheth and Kiran Desai from Surat, Haribhai Patel from Rajkot and Suhas Nambiar from Ahmedabad. According to CSS's S P Punalekar, who is conducting the seminar, the first day was devoted to situational analysis of the menace and its prevalence in the visible and unvisible sectors.
