Leading pairs disqualified

Anand Venkatraman
MUMBAI, NOV 11: Leading pairs, Naresh Yadav-Girdharilal Yadav and Ashim Mongia-Pushpendra Garg were disqualified due to two separate incidents in the third race of the Maersk National Enterprise Class Sailing Championships off the Naval Sailing Club here today.

In the first incident, Mongia-Garg were deemed to have denied the Yadavs the right to sail by stealing the wind (luffing) in the run (second leg of the loop). The Yadavs in turn were penalised for colliding with Mongia-Garg as the latter were rounding the leeward mark after the loop. As a result, Dilip Acharya-Jitendra Rami were awarded the first place.

Today's was an incident-filled race where the winds remained light at six knots. The Yadavs as usual got a good start but Mongia-Garg were continually bearing down on them. The positions were maintained till the run during which the sailors have the wind directly behind them.

Midway through this leg, Mongia-Garg, who were behind and to the right of Yadavs, stole the winds (luffing) and moved totheir left.

Naresh Yadav claimed that the sudden luffing by Mongia-Garg slowed them down. ``They were breathing down our noses but their act of suddenly luffing destroyed our momentum. We lost out there because we were too close. If we were about five to six boat lengths away, it would not have made a difference,'' he said.

Ashim Mongia countered Naresh Yadav's claims saying he did not flout the rules. ``Luffing is legal. They should have avoided getting in that position. We moved from the right to the left of Yadavs.'' Mongia-Garg were disqualified for this incident.

The sailor on the left usually has the right of way and so Mongia-Garg got into an advantageous position though they trailed by half a boat length. This gap was soon covered up and Mongia-Garg rounded the leeward mark first. During the rounding, again, there were incidents of collision.

Mongia-Garg were on the left and as they tacked left to round off the mark. And even as they did, Yadavs collided into Mongia-Garg's boat.

Mongia-Gargwent on to win the race by a margin of 29 seconds from that mark but for colliding near the leeward mark, Yadavs were disqualified.Dilip Acharya-Jitendra Rami, who were not even among the top eight after the first rounding, finished third after chasing Ram Kumar Singh-Suresh Singh for nearly half of the race. The latter lost their position in the last triangle and finished fourth. Dharmendra Singh-K Ragu, who were fourth after the first rounding were pushed back to the seventh position after the end of the loop but came back strongly to finish fifth.

Results (Provisional)

Race 3: 1. Dilip Acharya-Jitendra Rami (0 penalty points); 2. Ram Kumar Singh-Suresh Singh (3 PPs); 3. Dharmendra Singh-K Ragu (5.7 PPs); 4. Amol Rane-Girish Rao (8 PPs), 5. Sanjeev Chauhan-Rajesh Dhulaji (10 PPs), 6. Mehul Ashar-Rahul Kansara (13 PPs).
