Pre-arrest bail plea rejected

CHANDIGARH, Nov 11: The anticipatory bail plea moved by Assistant Excise and Taxation officer Narinder Kumar Gupta, promoted after allegedly submitting a fake degree, was rejected by UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi today.Gupta was booked by the Chandigarh Police for cheating, forgery, using a forged document as genuine and possessing a document knowing it to be forged on October 10 last year.According to the prosecution, the accused, by producing a bogus Bachelor of Arts degree from Magahad University in Patna, was able to get himself promoted as the assistant excise and taxation officer from taxation inspector in Harayana.The formal First Information Report, they added, was registered on the complaint of the Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner. A copy of Magahad University's result notification allegedly showing Narinder Kumar Gupta's result as cancelled was also enclosed by the prosecution to substantiate its contentions. The judge, while dismissing the plea, observed that in order to unearth the fake degree racket the custodial interrogation of the accused was necessary.
