Deluge of photos with love-child embarrasses Imran

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Islamabad, Nov 13: Pakistani cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan is once again in the dock for his alleged extramarital affair with Sita White as two leading newspapers here today splashed his photographs with the British heiress and their out-of-wedlock daughter Tyrian.

A report in English and Urdu language dailies quoting the British magazine, Hello, gave vivid description of an emotional meeting between Imran and Tyrian in mid-October in Los Angeles as they carried Imran's photographs with both Sita and their daughter on front pages, creating another embarrassing situation for Imran who is desperately trying to strengthen his political base with his Tehreek-e-Insaaf party.

The papers -- The Nation and Nawa-e-Waqt -- reproduced Sita's interview to the magazine in which she claimed that the ``momentous long-awaited rendezvous'' between Imran and Tyrian was the, ``fulfillment of a promise the former Pakistani captain had made last year in return for her dropping efforts tosecure a DNA test to establish his paternity (to Tyrian).''

The reports also said that Sita had already obtained a court default judgment in August 1997 in Los Angeles, where she and Tyrian stay, declaring Imran as the father of her child after he failed to submit to a blood test.

They said Imran's affair began in mid-80s and Sita did not reveal the name of her child's father when she gave birth to Tyrian in June 1992, but later declared Imran to be the father and even insists that he privately has always acknowledged the child to be his.

The Imran-Sita affair blew up just after he launched his political career in mid-1996 and founded his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (Pakistan movement for justice) to offer a third alternative to Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League of prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The personal reputation of an immensely popular Imran Khan, Pakistan's most successful cricket captain, was badly tarnished in a conservative Pakistanisociety when reports about him having an "illegitimate" child from white was reported by the Pakistani media just before the 1997 polls.

Imran, by then already married to Jemima Goldsmith, daughter of a British billionaire, strongly denied the allegations and described it as the handiwork of his political opponents but apparently the damage had been done and not only his party failed to win a single seat but Imran himself lost from all the nine different seats he contested.

Imran, however, vowed to make a comeback and started rebuilding his political party to rid Pakistan of its corrupt politicians and had recently launched scathing attacks on the Sharif government for its complete failure on the economic front. Incidentally both the newspapers are believed to be close to the Sharif government.
