Late latif Sunil Dutt, absent Azmi embarrass candidate

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 13: Congress candidate Vijay Deep's grand show at his constituency at Mehrauli appeared to be a non-starter with star campaigner Sunil Dutt disappointing the crowds this morning. Even though organisers had claimed that Rajya Sabha MP Shabana Azmi would also be addressing the crowds at the Kalu Ram Chowk, she too did not make an appearance.

Red-faced organisers and Vijay Deep's supporters at the end of the day said that Shabana Azmi had not confirmed whether she would be able to make it or not but Sunil Dutt had. ``From eight in the morning, loudspeakers were blarring that Sunil Dutt and Shabana Azmi would be coming and at 10 am the police even blocked the road for the VIP campaigners. But look it is three pm now and nobody is here,'' complained Amar Singh, a resident of Mehrauli.

Dutt was supposed to come and address the Congress supporters at noon. Deep's supporters had arranged for garlands of onions and potatoes, but when Dutt did not show up till 3.30 p.m, the onion garland and one packet was taken by a nearby dhaba owner.

A grand stage had been set up just outside the Mehrauli police station. Deep himself and several other leaders continued saying that Dutt was in Ambedkar Nagar and would be with them in a few moments. But after three hours of waiting there were not many takers of the Ambedkar Nagar story. After repeatedly listening to the same speeches on price hike, onions and potatoes being unavailable and worsening law and order situation, the crowds melted away.

Children stayed behind to collect congress party stickers, small flags and other knick-knacks. Later in the evening Fourth Protocol events managers in a statement said that Dutt arrived later and inaugurated the Congress campaign in Mehrauli. ``The BJP government in Delhi has done nothing in the last five years to improve the living standard of the people. Congress is the only party which can assure safety and security to the lives of people in Delhi,'' Dutt reportedly said. Touching on the onion issue Dutt said that onion, potatoes and tomatoes had gone out of the reach of common people and with sky-rocketing prices a panic situation had been created in the whole country.
