CALCUTTA, Nov 17: The Amateur Athletics Federation of India today announced a list of 27 athletes who will represent India in the Bangkok Asian Games. The squad has 14 female and 13 male athletes. `Golden girl' P T Usha, who could not complete the 200m women's race in the Inter-state Athletics Championships today due to a pulled hamstring, will compete in the 200m as well as the 400m at Bangkok. She will also anchor both the 4x100m and the 4x400m women's relay teams.
National shot put record holder Shakti Singh and Bahadur Singh, discus throwers Anil Kumar and Ajit Bhaduria, Javelin thrower Satbir Singh will form the men's team for field events at Bangkok.
Besides these athletes, Saraswati Dey in women's 4x100m relay and MK Asha in women's 4x400m relay are being kept on the reserve list. They will replace Usha if she is found unfit.
Lalit Bhanot, the AAFI secretary said that Lekha Thomas (women's triple jump and long jump), Sahib Singh (men's 400m hurdles), G G Promilla (Heptathlon) and BobbyAlosyous (women's high jump) were also considered for selection, but it was decided that they did not have a realistic chance of earning medals.
G G Promilla had come within 80 points of meeting the target in her event in the Open National, but decided to skip the Inter-state meet. ``Had she competed in the Inter-state meet and performed as well as she had in the Open Nationls, we would have considered her case,'' Bhanot said.
Sahib Singh, who could not meet the target in spite of creating national mark, did not accompany the Indian team for the SAF meet in Colombo. That worked against him. In women's high jump, the target of 1.88m was lowered to 1.87. Alosyous could clear only 1.81m in both the Open Nationals as well as the Inter-state meet.
Among the selected athletes Sunita Rani, Harbans Kaur, Gurmeet Singh and Anil Mathew failed to meet the targets in their events. Rani was considered as the selection committee felt that she can time 15:55s in the 5000m with competition.
Harbans Kaur was selectedas she had started very late, being down with hepatitis. The selection committee felt that she can achieve the target before the Asian Games. Gurmeet Kaur had finished third in the ATF in Fukuoka, her javelin throw being just 2 cm behind the silver medallist.
Bhanot informed that a ``confirmatory trial'' will be held in Delhi on December 2. Although no new athletes will be included to this list after this trial, any athlete who fails to maintain consistency, can be dropped. The preparation camp will move to Delhi on November 25, after all details have been finalised.
