Mahathir rages as Gore speaks for Anwar

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17: A blazing row erupted between Malaysia and the US as US Vice President Al Gore threw his weight behind fledgling Asian pro-democracy movements and hailed the `brave' clamour for reforms. ``Among nations suffering economic crisis, we continue to hear calls for democracy in many languages,'' Gore said on the eve of the APEC summit. ``We hear them today right here, right now -- among the brave people of Malaysia,'' he added, referring to weekly protests which have gathered hundreds of people since the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim.

He was addressing a candle-light dinner of APEC and business leaders also attended by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who has faced increasing calls from protestors to resign. Anwar is on trial for 10 charges of corruption and sodomy, which he has denied, alleging he is the victim of a high-level conspiracy. Malaysian leaders have repeatedly warned outsiders not to meddle in their internal affairs, and had hoped to sideline the trial which has drawn scores offoreign observers since it opened on November 2 by adjourning it until after the APEC meetings. But despite the deployment of thousands of troops on the streets for the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum protestors held noisy rallies. Mahathir made no comment after the dinner, but a livid Rafidah Aziz, Minister for International Trade and Industry, lashed out saying the Vice President had no idea what he was talking about. ``It's the most disgusting speech I have ever heard in my life. I hope I never live to hear another one from anyone like that,'' she said. ``Unfortunately he doesn't understand what is going on in this country,'' she said.
